Whether as character traits or emotions, pride and humility are often viewed as related or even opposed to each other. For example, in life, humble people seem to be more popular than arrogant and conceited people. When it comes to learning, being humble may be more helpful than being complacent. In Book II of The Treatise of Human Nature, David Hume contends that pride is an indirect emotion. He believes that a person may be proud of his wit, integrity, strength, learning, wealth, or family, etc. These things are associated with him and have qualities that are evaluated positively, while their opposites cause humility (T 2.1.2.5). This course wants to discuss issues such as pride and humility as emotions or as virtues, the appropriateness of pride and humility, pride, humility, and self-esteem, as well as intellectual pride and intellectual humility from the perspectives of moral psychology and epistemology.
