本課程為西洋哲學史的下學期課程，承接上學期對古希臘哲學的探討，範圍將涵蓋西方哲學自中世紀至二十世紀中葉之發展歷程，旨在使同學對西方哲學傳統的延續與轉化有基本的概念與理解。本課程採用Anthony Kenny主編的The Oxford History of Western Philosophy一書第二章至第五章作為主要閱讀教材。總共包含四個單元：第一單元為中世紀哲學（Medieval Philosophy），探討西元二世紀至十四世紀之哲學發展，聚焦於基督教思想與古典哲學之融合與轉化。第二單元從笛卡兒到康德（Descartes to Kant），探討十七至十八世紀近代哲學之發展，此時期標誌著哲學研究重心從神學形上學轉向認識論，並見證理性主義與經驗主義兩大傳統的形成與對話。第三單元追溯康德之後歐陸哲學（Continental Philosophy）從費希特到沙特多元發展，涵蓋德國觀念論、生命哲學、現象學與存在主義等重要思潮，呈現十九至二十世紀歐陸思想的豐富面貌。第四單元介紹英美哲學傳統的發展，從彌爾到維根斯坦（Mill to Wittgenstein），將從十九世紀的經驗主義與邏輯學革新，直到二十世紀分析哲學的興起與維也納學派的邏輯實證論。

This course is a second-semester course on the history of Western philosophy. It follows the discussion of ancient Greek philosophy from the previous semester. It will cover the development of Western philosophy from the Middle Ages to the mid-twentieth century. It aims to provide students with a basic concept and understanding of the continuation and transformation of the Western philosophical tradition. This course uses Chapters 2 to 5 of The Oxford History of Western Philosophy edited by Anthony Kenny as the main reading material. It contains a total of four units: The first unit is Medieval Philosophy, which explores the development of philosophy from the second century to the fourteenth century AD, focusing on the integration and transformation of Christian thought and classical philosophy. The second unit, from Descartes to Kant, explores the development of modern philosophy from the 17th to the 18th century. This period marked the shift in the focus of philosophical research from theological metaphysics to epistemology, and witnessed the formation and dialogue between the two major traditions of rationalism and empiricism. The third unit traces the diversified development of Continental Philosophy after Kant from Fichte to Sartre, covering important ideological trends such as German idealism, philosophy of life, phenomenology and existentialism, and presenting the rich features of continental thought from the 19th to the 20th centuries. The fourth unit introduces the development of the Anglo-American philosophical tradition, from Mill to Wittgenstein, from the empiricism and logic innovation in the 19th century to the rise of analytic philosophy and the logical positivism of the Vienna Circle in the 20th century.
