日語中有許多漢字，因此會中文的人，常會誤以為閱讀起來簡單，但是實際上調查發現，在初級階段，因為文章多為日常生活中可預測的內容(背景知識與原母語相似)，懂漢語的人依其母語原有閱讀習慣，加上對漢字的知識，就大致可以掌握文章意思。但是隨著文章深度提升，尤其是閱讀者以前未曾接觸過的新知、新想法、新邏輯，背景知識無法發會作用時，就會發現，懂漢字的人的理解程度反而不如母語為英語等的非漢字圈學習者。因為懂漢字的人明明已具有相當的日語語法語彙知識，卻因已經慣性的使用原母語的閱讀習慣閱讀日語，沒有活化已習得的日語語法語彙知識，忘了注意に、を、で等重要的語法關鍵，而造成很初級的誤解。

There are many Chinese characters in Japanese, so people who know Chinese often mistakenly think that it is easy to read. However, in fact, surveys have found that at the initial stage, because the articles are mostly predictable in daily life (the background knowledge is similar to the original mother tongue), people who know Chinese can roughly grasp the meaning of the article based on the original reading habits of their mother tongue and knowledge of Chinese characters. However, as the depth of the article increases, especially when the readers have new knowledge, new ideas, and new logic that they have not been exposed to before, and the background knowledge cannot play a role, it will be found that the understanding of people who know Chinese characters is actually not as good as that of non-Chinese learners whose native language is English. This is because people who understand Chinese characters obviously already have considerable knowledge of Japanese grammar and vocabulary, but because they have habitually read Japanese using the reading habits of their original mother tongue, they have not activated the acquired knowledge of Japanese grammar and vocabulary, and have forgotten to pay attention to important grammatical keys such as に, を, で, etc., resulting in very basic misunderstandings.
