人類的文明發展可以從都市化的進程中找到具體的現象，藉由此來掌握文明社會展開的基礎原型與之後的演化機制，同時也理解人在社會群聚過程中的行動或思想原理。此課程是從認識都市概念與掌握都市史理論出發，在此基礎上以古代作為歷史期程的時間跨度，學習歐亞大陸沃土地帶與地中海都市文明展開的經典案例與課題，並且將世界區域劃分上其他重要的古代文明都市納入課程講授範圍，以多元的角度來捕捉都市發展的原型。另外，課程也重視修習者在講授學習後的思考理解，因此也會讓修習者進行分組發想，並讓其找出自身興趣之議題進行期末報告，與全體課堂成員進行思辨與研討。
　　基於以上，此課程首先以都市的定義、各種學門中的都市認知作為講授內容，待釐清捕捉都市面貌的思維後，開始認識都市史學者的視野與方法論；而此課程的第二個重點部分，在於以西方為主軸講授自人類形成出聚落與文明開始，探論城邦、領域國家形成後的都市等，具體地認識古代都市；然而，在西方都市史學經常忽視的其他地理區域中，東亞的漢儒文明圈所形成的都市，以及南亞以宗教文明作為宇宙觀所形成的都市，乃至於中南美洲的叢林文明都市皆是此課程的補充重點，為講授的第三部分。
　　課程的最後主要是以主題觀點的方式切入都市史。此部分並非以斷代的角度來探討都市的通時性，而是以空間領域區位、社會構造、族群思想或政治制度等多種人文與社會科學的視野來端看古代歷史中的都市，除了藉此來訓練多重文化觀察視野外，也讓學習者理解文化累積，將自我觀點與他人視野作結合並發表，於課堂上進行總體研討，琢磨空間史的思考邏輯能力與論點整合說服力。

The development of human civilization can find specific phenomena from the process of urbanization, through which we can grasp the basic prototype and subsequent evolutionary mechanism of civilized society, and at the same time understand the principles of people's actions or thoughts in the process of social gathering. This course starts from understanding the concept of city and mastering the theory of urban history. On this basis, ancient times are used as a historical period, and classic cases and topics of the development of urban civilization in the fertile land of Eurasia and the Mediterranean are studied. Other important ancient civilization cities in the world's regional divisions are included in the course teaching scope, and the prototype of urban development is captured from multiple perspectives. In addition, the course also attaches great importance to the students' thinking and understanding after the lectures. Therefore, the students will be divided into groups to come up with ideas, find out topics of their own interest and make final reports, and discuss and discuss with all class members.
Based on the above, this course first uses the definition of urban and urban cognition in various disciplines as the teaching content. After clarifying the thinking of capturing the urban appearance, we begin to understand the vision and methodology of urban historians; and the second key part of this course is to use the West as the main axis to teach since humans formed settlements and civilizations, and explore city-states and territorial states. A detailed understanding of ancient cities after the formation of cities, etc.; however, in other geographical areas that are often ignored by Western urban history, cities formed by the Han-Confucian civilization circle in East Asia, cities formed by religious civilization as a cosmology in South Asia, and even jungle civilization cities in Central and South America are the supplementary focus of this course, which is the third part of the lecture.
The end of the course mainly focuses on urban history from a thematic perspective. This part does not explore the chronological nature of cities from a chronological perspective, but looks at cities in ancient history from a variety of humanities and social science perspectives such as spatial location, social structure, ethnic thought or political system. In addition to training multiple cultural observation perspectives, it also allows learners to understand cultural accumulation, combine and express their own views with others' perspectives, conduct overall discussions in class, and ponder the logical thinking ability and persuasiveness of argument integration in spatial history.
