Understanding East Asia: Civilization and Culture
Course Target
The "Understanding East Asia: Civilization and Culture" course aims to explore the civilizational development and cultural expression of the East Asian world in historical changes from a diverse and open academic perspective. As one of the important civilization circles in the world, East Asia has nurtured profound ideological traditions and literary models, and also created special social forms and political and economic structures. In its long-term interaction with the world, East Asia has formed a cross-border civilizational activity and cultural network, thus demonstrating a high degree of continuity and diversity. The establishment of this course attempts to use a systematic and wide-angle course unit design and special lecture format to enable students to understand the formation and development context of East Asian civilization and culture from the two aspects of "civilization" and "culture", such as urban development, legal and political systems, educational inheritance, knowledge production, media circulation, language, religious beliefs, literary traditions, artistic practices, and folk experiences, and further think about its transformation potential and possible directions in the contemporary context.
As a lecture course subsidized by the Eurasia Foundation (from Asia) project in Japan, the unit topics will cover language, literature and art, ideological culture, social economy, political system and other fields. It is planned to invite experts and scholars from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Europe and other places to use their research expertise and cultural care to guide course students through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary academic dialogues to understand the civilization development and cultural changes of East Asia from different aspects, so as to understand the characteristics and diversity of East Asian civilization and culture.
This course has three goals: First, to deepen students’ understanding of East Asian civilization and culture through a cross-regional and cross-field comparative perspective. Second, cultivate a macro perspective that respects diversity and pursues symbiosis, hoping that students can establish their own positioning in global dialogue. Third, provide opportunities for direct communication with domestic and foreign experts and scholars, enhance learning motivation, and enhance academic foundation. Through this course, students will have both humanistic qualities and an international perspective, echoing Tunghai University’s spirit of “holistic education” and “viewing the world,” thereby demonstrating the innovative power of integrating tradition and modernity.
