A common method for modeling degradation processes involves the use of stochastic processes. The literature highlights several widely adopted models, including the Wiener process, gamma process, and inverse Gaussian process. Increment degradation models can be seen as extensions of these stochastic process-based models, achieved by relaxing the additive property. Increment degradation models are purely empirical in nature. This opens up opportunities to explore alternative distributions for modeling increments, allowing for a more flexible representation of degradation behavior. This course addresses the challenges that arise from the absence of the additive property, particularly in constructing likelihood functions and predicting lifetime distributions.
