核心閱讀文本為 Mathias Risse 的《Political Theory of the Digital Age: Where Artificial Intelligence Might Take Us》(2023),其主張政治哲學在數位世紀中必須成為一種科技哲學,主動回應技術如何形構人類生活世界(lifeworlds)與公共秩序。
(ChatGPT, personal communication, June 9, 2025)This course focuses on new challenges posed by artificial intelligence and digital technology to political philosophy, especially how current technology can reshape our public life, recognition patterns and power structures. The core reading text is Mathias Risse's "Political Theory of the Digital Age: Where Artificial Intelligence Might Take Us" (2023), whose proactive political philosophy must become a science and technology philosophy in the digital century, actively responding to how technology forms lifeworlds and public order. The "righteousness" of this course titled "AI and Righteousness" does not only refer to the construction of abstract theories, but focuses on how the various practical aspects of righteousness are adapted and challenged under the conditions of rapid development of digital and artificial intelligence technologies - such as democratic operation, knowledge acquisition and distribution, identity recognition and exclusion, and how public reason is built. Risse proposed "political philosophy in the world of digital life" is a tool that seeks to use political philosophy as a tool to respond to the new political and ethical problems brought by AI technology, and to enter the problem field of "justice" from a new practical orientation.
The first four weeks of the course will lay the theorem foundation to help students become familiar with the key concepts in political philosophy, including justice, public rationality, citizenship and intellectual power. Students will read the "Stanfer Philosophy Encyclopedia" and "The Encyclopedia of Chinese Literature and Philosophy" about righteousness, public reason, John Roles, and Mac Foucault, and understand the ideological resources cited in Risse's books. Starting the fifth week, we will study Risse's works chapter by chapter. The reading content covers the future of AI and democracy, intellectual rights, profound technology and false information ethical issues, fourth-generation human rights, data social status, and moral subjectivity in the AI era. Students will learn how to use political philosophy resources to respond to contemporary technical issues, and think about how public rationality and free society can be built and structured in "Digital Life 2.0/3.0".
The course emphasizes conceptual analysis and critical thinking, through introduction discussions, class reports and book work, encourages students to develop personal views, and links abstract theories with specific scientific and technological practices. The final report is equipped with oral briefing, individual discussions and book submission, etc., to help students cultivate research, oral and book expression skills.
