5251 - AI與正義
Seminar: AI and Justice
Course Target
核心閱讀文本為 Mathias Risse 的《Political Theory of the Digital Age: Where Artificial Intelligence Might Take Us》(2023),其主張政治哲學在數位世紀中必須成為一種科技哲學,主動回應技術如何形構人類生活世界(lifeworlds)與公共秩序。
(ChatGPT, personal communication, June 9, 2025)
This course focuses on the new challenges posed by artificial intelligence and digital technology to political philosophy, especially how current technologies are reshaping our public life, cognition, and power structures. The core reading text is "Political Theory of the Digital Age: Where Artificial Intelligence Might Take Us" (2023) by Mathias Risse, which advocates that political philosophy must become a philosophy of technology in the digital century, actively responding to how technology shapes human lifeworlds and public order. The "justice" in the title of this course "AI and Justice" does not only refer to the construction of abstract theories, but focuses on how various practical aspects of justice—such as the operation of democracy, the acquisition and distribution of knowledge, the recognition and exclusion of identity, and how public rationality is maintained—are rewritten and challenged under the conditions of rapid development of digital and artificial intelligence technologies. The "Political Philosophy in the Digital Life World" proposed by Risse is an attempt to use political philosophy as a tool to respond to the new political and ethical problems brought about by AI technology, and to approach the issue of "justice" from a new practical orientation.
The first four weeks of the course will lay a theoretical foundation and help students become familiar with key concepts in political philosophy, including justice, public reason, citizenship and intellectual power. Students will read entries on justice, public reason, John Rawls, Michel Foucault, etc. in the "Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy" and "Chinese Encyclopedia of Philosophy" to understand the ideological resources cited in Risse's book. Starting from the fifth week, we will study Risse's works chapter by chapter. The reading content covers topics such as AI and the future of democracy, intellectual rights, ethical issues of deepfake technology and false information, fourth-generation human rights, the social status of data, and moral subjectivity in the AI era. Students will learn how to use political philosophy resources to respond to contemporary technological issues, and think about how public reason and free society can be maintained and reconstructed in "Digital Life 2.0/3.0".
The course emphasizes conceptual analysis and critical thinking. Through guided discussions, class reports and written assignments, students are encouraged to develop personal perspectives and connect abstract theory with concrete scientific and technological practice. The final report consists of oral presentations, individual discussions and written submissions to help students develop their research, oral and written expression skills.
