Charles Taylor 可以說是當今最重要的溝通分析哲學與歐陸哲學的思想家，本書的副標題為The full shape of human linguistic capacity. 作者探討的是人類的語言能力。Taylor主張人是自我解釋的動物，無論在個人的或者社群的層次均然。對他而言，語言是此種自我詮釋、從而自我創造的能力的重要向度。Martin Heidegger嘗謂語言是存有的安宅，其意義與之有可以相互借鏡之處。然而Taylor深受分析哲學傳統薰陶，以其向來清晰的表達方式，為Heidegger神祕的語言賦予清楚的內涵。
Charles Taylor can be said to be the most important thinker of today's communication and European philosophy. The subtitle of this book is The full shape of human linguistic capacity. The author explores human language abilities. Taylor advocates are self-explanatory animals, regardless of whether they are in the personal or community level. For him, language is an important dimension of this ability to self-speak and create. Martin Heidegger said that language is the home of existence, and its meaning and existence can be borrowed from each other. However, Taylor is deeply influenced by the tradition of analytical philosophy, and with its ever-clear expression, it gives clear connotations to Heidegger's mythical language.
