西方漢學的儒學研究已累積百年之久，內容豐富多元，深刻影響當代學者的儒學論述。東西方學者基於文化背景與關懷課題的差異，面對儒學時觀察視角恰能形成深具價值的對照，任何研究者均不應輕忽。故本課程旨在研讀近百年重要漢學家的儒學論述，熟悉並活用國際學術資源，強化研究能力。本課程首先將介紹西方漢學界著名的儒家研究流派，包括將儒家稱為博物館骨董的列文森、強調儒學自由傳統價值的狄培理、定名「波士頓儒學」的南樂山、稱「夏威夷儒學」的郝大維與安樂哲，以及借鑒知識建構理論而對「儒家」概念進行考古的詹啟華等。在研讀上述著作之後，學生需撰寫完整論文一篇，並於課堂中發表。

Confucian research in Western Sinology has been accumulated for hundreds of years, with rich and diverse content, which has profoundly influenced the discussion of Confucianism by contemporary scholars. Based on the differences in cultural backgrounds and concerns between Eastern and Western scholars, the perspective of observation when facing Confucianism can form a valuable contrast, which no researcher should ignore. Therefore, this course aims to study the Confucian expositions of important Sinologists in the past century, become familiar with and make full use of international academic resources, and strengthen research capabilities. This course will first introduce the famous Confucian research schools in Western Sinology circles, including Levinson who calls Confucianism a museum antique, Billy Dee who emphasizes the traditional value of Confucian freedom, Nan Leshan who calls it "Boston Confucianism", Hao Dawei and Anlezhe who call it "Hawaiian Confucianism", and Zhan Qihua who draws on the theory of knowledge construction to conduct an archeology of the concept of "Confucianism". After studying the above works, students are required to write a complete paper and present it in class.
