本課程的目標在於使學生瞭解西洋文學與文化研究的主要理論、處理的議題、觀察的對象、使用的研究方法，並將所學應用在自己所感興趣領域的研究中。課中將研讀理論的一手文本，並配合以在華文文學與文化的應用文本。聚焦探討的範疇與議題則為：
1. 知識與權力: 結構主義、後結構主義
2. 文化認同: 主體、歷史建構
3. 文化地理學: 空間、城市、地方、全球化
4. 後現代文化: 擬像、懷舊、大眾文化、雅俗

The purpose of this course is to enable students to understand the main theories, handling issues, observation objects, and research methods of use in Western literature and cultural research, and to apply what they learn to study in their areas of interest. In the course, we will study first-hand texts of theoretical discussions and cooperate with texts to apply in Chinese literature and culture. The scope and discussion topics focused on exploration are:
1. Knowledge and power: structure theory, rear structure theory
2. Cultural recognition: subject, historical structure
3. Cultural geography: space, city, place, globalization
4. Postmodern culture: statues, old, general culture, elegant and vulgar
