本課程的目標在於使學生瞭解西洋文學與文化研究的主要理論、處理的議題、觀察的對象、使用的研究方法，並將所學應用在自己所感興趣領域的研究中。課中將研讀理論的一手文本，並配合以在華文文學與文化的應用文本。聚焦探討的範疇與議題則為：
1. 知識與權力: 意識形態、霸權、符號學、結構主義、後結構主義
2. 文化認同: 心理分析、主體、歷史建構
3. 文化地理學: 空間、城市、地方、全球化
4. 後現代文化: 文化資本、擬像、懷舊、大眾文化、雅俗

The goal of this course is to enable students to understand the main theories, issues dealt with, objects of observation, and research methods used in the study of Western literature and culture, and to apply what they have learned in research in their fields of interest. In the class, primary texts on theory will be studied, coupled with applied texts on Chinese literature and culture. The areas and topics focused on are:
1. Knowledge and power: ideology, hegemony, semiotics, structuralism, poststructuralism
2. Cultural identity: psychological analysis, subject, and historical construction
3. Cultural geography: space, city, place, globalization
4. Postmodern culture: cultural capital, simulacra, nostalgia, popular culture, elegance and customs
