Multicultural Citizenship
Course Target
The goal of the social field curriculum is to inspire students to recognize differences, be willing to affirm themselves, appreciate others and respect differences.
The sociology of money leads us to study our "self-formation" as well as the "social relations" and conflict phenomena reflected in this era by comparing the differences in concepts, ideologies, and institutional characteristics of money. Reviewing our imagination and understanding of money is the best starting point for understanding ourselves and society. In an era when material culture and money logic penetrate into various "non-market areas", it reflects our collective cultural preferences and scarcity anxiety. Therefore, we will explore together the phenomenon of money in modern society and its various social effects.
This course involves money, self and society. The content is set as a basic elective course for general social studies in universities. It is based on the understanding of multiculturalism under capitalism. The goal is to guide students to have a richer understanding and imagination about money culture and social class issues. From the mainstream discussion of "creating money" in modern times, we will see the history of the transformation of collective social values. With an in-depth discussion of contemporary capitalist phenomena and self-development, we will understand the social construction implications of the concept of self and money.
The main content of this course includes: taking contemporary development phenomena such as money and market, as well as social conflicts as the starting point, starting from individual money stories, exploring issues such as self-formation, social relations, social exchange, power, class, alienation, commodification, ideology, social conflicts, etc.
Looking back over the past thirty years in Taiwanese society, the acceleration of the social polarization between rich and poor, the widespread sense of lack of money, the fear of uncertainty, the phenomenon of financial bubbles, and the various youth impoverishment phenomena in the consumer society have gradually been linked to the basic characteristics of global capitalist social life. In this social context, the logic of "money" and "market" has become the core logic for the government to guide the allocation of public resources. Taiwan has shifted from a market economy to a market society. The logic of money has penetrated traditional non-market fields, and has influenced the ideology of Taiwan's social development direction. At the same time, at the level of daily life, "money" and "market" have also become the logic of action for people to understand "self-worth" and "dignity" and construct "social relationships", becoming the core of personal self-governance. At the same time, market-oriented values have gradually penetrated into various "non-market fields", including politics, education, medical care, religion, family and even personal daily life. As a "governance" concept in the era of globalization, money has also brought about more comprehensive and in-depth social conflicts.
Through course discussions, we hope to bring students new public reflections on money concepts and the possibility of creating new types of money value. At the same time, it is an in-depth exploration of how, in the era of high capitalism, an individual can break through the framework and re-understand the relationship between money, self, and society. This course will focus on issues such as money, work, consumption, public resource allocation, social control, social responsibility, etc., and lead students to explore the modern development of themselves and Taiwanese society, as well as the social roots of current social conflicts.
