Thinking in Philosophy

Course Target

This course aims to train students to use philosophical critical thinking methods to examine AI ethics and social issues. The goal of the course is to use philosophical moral theories and speculative tools to identify, analyze and evaluate the ethical challenges caused by various AI applications, and to cultivate the ability to reflect and discuss public issues during course discussions. The course content covers an introduction to philosophical methodology, an introduction to the main theories of ethics, and ethical controversies of AI in different fields, including generative AI and discriminative AI, AI bias and fairness, privacy and surveillance, responsibility and accountability, labor and workplace supervision, AI partners and emotional attachment, and AI safety and AGI risks, etc. The course also guides students to use the Teachable Machine tool to design and implement topics related to AI ethics issues, so as to transform abstract ethical reflection abilities into specific technical application cases. Courses are mainly conducted through lectures, discussions, and topic production. There are three classes every week. The first two classes are mainly lectures by teachers, and the third class is for in-depth discussion. The first stage is basic theoretical construction (weeks 1-4), the second stage is the discussion of core issues (weeks 5-12), the third stage is cutting-edge issues and applications (weeks 13-15), and the fourth stage is practical integration and reflection (weeks 16-18). It is hoped that through this course design, students can develop a critical and reflective attitude to think and use AI-related tools.
