Classics and Paradigms in Humanities:the Oriental
Course Target
1. Course objectives
This course will use the classic "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword" published in 1946 by American cultural anthropologist Ruth Fulton Benedict (1887-1948) as the core reading to understand the multiplicity of Japanese culture. This is a treatise on Japan written from an American point of view. It was originally written as a policy report on Japan for senior military officials. Panade is not Japanese and has never set foot in Japan in his life. However, the "empirical nature" of this book has in turn limited Japanese people's self-understanding. There is no doubt that today, more than 70 years later, the publication of "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword" does represent the starting point for the concrete integration of the United States and Japan after the war, whether in a cultural or political sense. This course not only focuses on the teaching of theory and knowledge, but also focuses on students' acquisition of cultural anthropological thinking and understanding and exploration of multi-dimensional values such as civilized society and sustainable practice. Through this course, students are expected to understand the comparison and mutual understanding of different cultures emphasized in "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword". Then reflect on the issues of sustainable development and multicultural symbiosis in the current globalized economy. Ultimately, students develop critical thinking skills and learn to observe various social phenomena from multiple perspectives.
2. Course content
This course will introduce Ruth Panade's "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword", explore Japanese cultural patterns, and compare it with the Christian world.
