Japanese Architects and Their Works: Cultural Understanding and Interpretive Expression
Course Target
Since the 20th century, Japanese culture has gradually shown a strong posture in the globalized cultural field. It has attracted international attention through traditional and contemporary expressions such as animation and tea ceremony, and has become a force that cannot be ignored in global cultural exchanges. In the field of architecture, Japanese architecture has had a profound impact on contemporary architectural theory and practice with its unique spatial aesthetics, exquisite detail operations, keen response to nature and sense of place, and deep concern for sustainability and environmental ethics. In 2024, the Pritzker Architecture Prize was awarded to Riken Yamamoto, making Japanese architects the highest in the world in terms of the number of winners of this award. If the Pritzker Prize is regarded as the highest form of recognition of the value of contemporary architecture by the international architectural community, then the continued winning of Japanese architects undoubtedly shows that after a hundred years of development, the value criteria of modern architecture have shifted significantly.
In this context, what urgently needs to be further explored is: under what cultural conditions and historical context did Japanese architecture develop such architectural characteristics that can be highly recognized by the international system? How can the spatial, material and social views it embodies find its place in the architectural framework dominated by Western modernity, and even form an architectural language with the potential for reflexive criticism? For architectural education and practitioners in non-Western European cultural contexts, the international success of Japanese architecture is not only a case worth learning from, but also a key opportunity that prompts us to reflect on the flow of global architectural values and the repositioning of cultural positions.
This course is a tripartite collaboration between Tunghai Architecture + Taichung Green Pictures + SANAA. It combines the "observation", "expression" and "understanding" of architecture. The main body of the course is based on the design activities of Japanese architects such as Tadao Ando and Kazuyo Sejima who completed their works in Taiwan. It will lead students to understand the development of modern Japanese architecture, and provide an in-depth explanation and discussion of the generation context and cultural implications behind it. On the other hand, while accumulating the basic understanding of Japanese modern architecture, students will also use green beautiful pictures as the object of observation, and construct narrative content about green beautiful pictures through on-site visits and records. On top of this, students must serve as Lvmeitu architectural tour guides and use the narrative content written above to actually introduce the architecture to the general public in the regular weekend tour activities planned by Lvmeitu. In addition, this course will also be extended to hold on-site teaching activities such as Tokyo architectural tours as appropriate.
Course Description
The core goal of this course is to guide students to deeply understand the unique value and far-reaching influence of Japanese architecture in the cultural and architectural context of globalization and internationalization in the 20th and 21st centuries. In a modern architectural system where the global architectural vocabulary is diverse but still dominated by Western values, how Japanese architects can gain international recognition and even lead the trend with their unique interpretation of space, details and culture has become a core topic discussed in this course. Through the analysis of representative Japanese architects and their works, students will master their aesthetic perspectives, design techniques and the cultural context behind them, and further understand how Japanese architecture shapes its cultural position, responds to international attention, and even provides inspiration and possibilities to non-Western regions such as Taiwan in the process of globalization.
