Since the 20th century, Japanese culture has gradually developed a strong attitude in the global cultural field. It has been widely regarded as international attractions from traditional and representative forms such as animation and tea ceremony, and has become a force that cannot be ignored in global cultural exchanges. In the architectural field, Japanese architecture has a profound impact on contemporary architectural theory and practical structure with its unique spatial aesthetics, exquisite detailed operations, sensitive responses to nature and the scene, and deep-seated relationship to perpetuity and environmental ethics. In 2024, the Prizik Architecture Award was given to Yamamoto, making Japanese architects the highest in the world in the number of winners of this award. If the Prizek Award is regarded as the recognition of the highest form of contemporary building value in the international architecture community, the continuous award of Japanese architects undoubtedly shows that the value judgment has shown a clear turn after the development of modern buildings for a hundred years.
Under this structure, it is urgent to further explore: What cultural conditions and historical structures did Japanese architecture give birth to such architectural characteristics that can be highly recognized by international systems? How can the spatial view, material view and social view find its position in the architectural framework dominated by Western modernity, and even form a certain architectural language with reflexive critical potential? For architecture education and practicers who are not in Western European cultural contexts, the international success of Japanese architecture is not only a case worth borrowing, but also a key mechanism that prompts us to reflect on the global architectural value flow and cultural position repositioning.
This course is a tripartite cooperation between Donghai Architecture + Taichung Green Picture + SANAA, combining the "view", "expression" and "knowledge" of the building. The course mainly focuses on the design activities of Japanese architects such as Tadao Ando and Kazuo Meishi who completed their works in Taiwan. It leads classmates to understand the development of Japanese modern architecture, and in-depth explanation and discussion of the generational structures and cultural implications behind it. On the other hand, while accumulating the understanding of modern Japanese architecture foundations, students will also use green pictures as the target of observation, and through actual visits and records, they will construct the explanation of green pictures. Above this, students must use the content of the above-mentioned edited work as a green art architecture guide and actually introduce the architecture to the general public in the regular weekend navigation activities planned by green art. In addition, this course will also extend the situation to organize local teaching activities such as Tokyo construction travel.
The core goal of this course is to guide students to understand the unique values and profound impacts that Japanese Architecture showed in the cultural and internationalization of the twenty-first century culture and architecture. In a modern architectural system with diverse structures in the global architecture, but still dominated by Western values, how Japanese architects can gain international recognition and even lead trends through their unique interpretations of space, details and culture, becoming the core topic of this course to explore. Through the analysis of representative Japanese architects and their works, students will master their aesthetic views, design techniques and cultural ties behind them, and further understand how Japanese architecture shapes its cultural location, responds to international concerns, and even the initiation and possibilities provided by non-Western regions such as Taiwan.
