History of World Architecture. (I)

Course Target

What is architectural history? From the most superficial level, history is about finding your own perspective on how to live and settle in the past, present, and future. But if we think more deeply, under the various sayings such as "poetry is more real than history" and "ornament and sin", historical research has encountered an unprecedented crisis in the twentieth century. Architectural history has also become a dumping ground for styles, materials and forms, and it is difficult to become a method of seeing, thinking and making the world. It was not until the rise of "bottom-up" history in the 1970s that under the influence of fields previously considered "subculture", including social history, material and cultural history, the historical horizons in architectural schools gradually opened up, and architectural history returned to the concerns of contemporary people. From prehistory, classical, medieval, Renaissance to modern times, it is the research scope of traditional art history. The so-called "Western" architectural history seems to be its own system. Limited by the perspectives of nation-states and tourism marketing, we are mostly accustomed to thinking about style in terms of territorial boundaries. However, from a post-colonial and planetary perspective, the interdependence and interweaving of the world also shows conclusive evidence in material civilization.

Architectural research is at the same time cultural history, including painting, sculpture, literature, philosophy and other techniques related to manufacturing and creation, and it is also social history, including customs, environment, urban and other surrounding conditions. The former emphasizes the importance of precedents and innovations, while the latter emphasizes the design behavior as part of the world network. This course takes the causal relationship of time as the vertical axis and the connection relationship of space and geography as the horizontal axis, intertwining architectural behaviors in human history. Through this learning process, students will gradually digest, absorb and understand architecture as a man-made object and the shaping force in the historical process: including social, political, geographical and environmental factors, and then find their own position in the spectrum of history. Once we open up historical consciousness, the shift in attitude from tradition to history also helps architects liberate themselves from current and contemporary dilemmas, and then deeply appreciate the openness rooted in the past.
