Sociological Theories (I)

Course Target

[Official version of the course syllabus]: Please refer to the department website "Courses" --> "Undergraduate Department 114-1" --> "Sociological Theory (1)" in the first week of school. There is still room for fine-tuning in the current version.

[Recommendation for prerequisite courses]: Although this course does not have set prerequisites, students who have already completed either "Sociology" or "History of Social Thought", which is a required course in this department, are recommended to take "Sociological Theory (1)", which is less strenuous. Please evaluate yourself.

[Course Introduction]: Before reading the following introduction, you might as well ask yourself: What is "theory" (regardless of whether it is edible or whether it can be eaten)? Why does sociology need “theory”? Does it have a similar status to "theory" in other disciplines? How much “theory” is there to learn? What is the relationship between these "theories" and other social phenomena and empirical data?

There are no fairly consistent answers to the above questions in sociology, and even each country and each academic tradition has different criteria for selecting sociological theories. This is related to the quite diverse research interests and research approaches of sociological researchers. However, from a learner's perspective, it is unlikely to understand all past and contemporary theories within a limited time frame. If you rely on the selection of a particular academic tradition, you may lose the opportunity to recognize the contributions and essence of other theories. Therefore, the strategy adopted in this course is to divide issues of common concern among theorists into several themes. For each topic, several sociological theoretical texts from different academic traditions are included. The purpose of this is to help learners understand within a limited time how sociological theorists find problems and establish inferences on topics of common concern, how to define research problems, the connotation of concepts and the relationship between concepts, and the strategies for explaining/interpreting social phenomena.

Through the above course objectives, "Sociological Theory" hopes to deepen learners' social analysis and academic inquiry abilities on the basis of "sociology" and "history of social thought", especially the ability to shuttle and reflect between theoretical perspectives and empirical phenomena. In this department, "Sociological Theory" is the core of the department's characteristic course group "Western European Social Theory and Thought". It attaches great importance to the training of abstract thinking and the close relationship between theory and social trends. For learners who take courses related to research methods, or who are interested in engaging in surveys or research topics in the future, "Sociological Theory" will help learners be able to identify important research questions from various materials, use/construct appropriate concepts, and respond to existing explanations/interpretations when exposed to various survey interview materials, online and offline discussions, and documents.
