Social imagination is the way people imagine their collective social life. Taylor believes that modern society has three characteristics: market economy, public territories and people's autonomy, which divides European traditional society and modern secular moral order. Taylor explains how we develop a social imagination, understand it as an economic system for exchange goods and services that enhance each other’s well-being, how we imagine the public domain as a field where strangers discuss mutually quarrels, and how we develop the concept of a self-ruling people who have no objection to secular actions that transcend principles.
