臺灣是位於亞洲大陸東南方與太平洋西岸東亞島弧間的島嶼，不僅是從遼闊的太平洋進入亞洲大陸重要的門戶，同時也是東亞地區南北往來的輻輳要地。自17世紀前期起，臺灣長期是人流、物流的轉運中心，隨著臺灣各歷史時期島上政權的遞嬗更迭，與周邊國家、勢力、人群的互動形成錯綜複雜的關係。本課程將以海洋史的跨領域視角，介紹臺灣各歷史時期重大的涉外事件之經緯，引導學生瞭解臺灣在不同歷史時期所面臨的涉外問題、歷史處境、抉擇、因應方式及其影響。講授內容將依照時代順序，介紹各涉外事件相關的國內外史料，敘述各時期影響臺灣處理重大涉外事件的國內外要素，引導學生透過史料的研讀和分析比較各方勢力對個別事件的看法和決策過程，從而適切掌握人們如何因應歷史洪流中各種條件而做決策及其影響，培養歷史思辨能力，以及跨時代、跨區域的歷史思維。

Taiwan is an island located between the southeastern part of the Asian continent and the East Asian island arc on the west coast of the Pacific. It is not only an important gateway from the vast Pacific Ocean into the Asian continent, but also an important hub for north-south exchanges in East Asia. Since the early 17th century, Taiwan has long been a transshipment center for people and goods. With the successive changes of political power on the island in various historical periods of Taiwan's history, intricate relationships have formed with interactions with neighboring countries, forces, and groups of people. This course will introduce the major foreign-related events in Taiwan's various historical periods from the interdisciplinary perspective of maritime history, and guide students to understand the foreign-related issues, historical situations, choices, response methods and their impacts that Taiwan faced in different historical periods. The teaching content will be in chronological order, introducing domestic and foreign historical materials related to various foreign-related events, describing the domestic and foreign factors that affected Taiwan's handling of major foreign-related events in each period, and guiding students to study and analyze historical materials to compare the views and decision-making processes of various forces on individual events, so as to properly understand how people make decisions in response to various conditions in the historical torrent and their impact, and cultivate historical thinking skills and cross-era and cross-regional historical thinking.
