歷史地理學是探索歷史時期各種地理現象的演變及其和人們的生產勞動、社會活動的相互影響，它的學科性質是屬於現代地理學的一支，且是歷史學、地理學的輔助學科。課程中透過史料及相關論文之閱讀，並在課堂上加以討論，期使修課同學瞭解中國歷史各個時期之地理相關問題，建立初步的中國歷史地理知識。課程分為幾大主題：「什麼是歷史地理學」、「歷史自然地理-氣候變遷」、「歷史自然地理-水文」、「歷史自然地理-氣候變遷-沙漠化問題」、「歷史政治地理-歷代地方行政制度」、「歷史經濟地理-人口分布與遷徙」、「歷史經濟地理-歷代農業區變遷」、「歷史經濟地理-手工業的分布與發展」等，並藉論文摘要、書評及學期報告之習作，加強同學思考與寫作之能力。

Historical geography explores the evolution of various geographical phenomena in historical periods and their interaction with people's productive labor and social activities. Its subject nature is a branch of modern geography and an auxiliary subject to history and geography. In the course, through reading historical materials and related papers and discussing them in class, students are expected to understand geography-related issues in various periods of Chinese history and establish preliminary knowledge of Chinese historical geography. The course is divided into several major themes: "What is historical geography", "Historical physical geography - climate change", "Historical physical geography - hydrology", "Historical physical geography - climate change - desertification issues", "Historical political geography - local administrative systems of the past dynasties", "Historical Economic Geography - Population Distribution and Migration", "Historical Economic Geography - Changes in Agricultural Areas through the Past", "Historical Economic Geography - Distribution and Development of Handicraft Industry", etc., and through thesis abstracts, book reviews and term report exercises, students' thinking and writing abilities will be enhanced.
