[The Magic of Fixed Expressions]
This 2-credit semester-long course is designed for students who would like to enhance their daily oral English proficiency. The instructor capitalizes on the massive use of a wide variety of fixed expressions in English to achieve this teaching goal. In this course, English fixed expressions are viewed in a broad sense, including contractions, clipped words, acronyms, phrasal verbs, similes, metaphors, clichés (proverbs & sayings), and slang. To allow students to make the most of fixed expressions in their English oral production, the instructor also incorporates communication skills and strategies into teaching. Basically, class materials will be covered through an integration of teacher-controlled guidance and student-centered practice in individual and interactive activities in an organized, systematic way. Hopefully, students will understand, integrate, apply, and internalize what they have learned in class and equip themselves with the ability to speak in English in a more native-like fashion.[The magic of English films]

The SENM program is a student-centered module-based program which offers students choices and small, interactive classes. The program encourages students to tailor their English learning to their specific needs and interests by offering four semester-based modules: Career and Profession, Daily Communication, Multiculturalism, and Self-Expression Skills. Additionally, within each of the four modules, there are different themes, or topics, around which each course‘s curriculum is built. Each SENM student must choose two different module courses in one academic year according to their interests and needs. The program’s small class size (no more than 25 students) means that a variety of class activities such as discussions, role plays, and presentations are an integral part of the program.
This specific course belongs to the Daily Communication Module. This module emphasizes real-life English for effective communication. It provides conversation models and practices for a variety of common scenarios in everyday life. 2) use spontaneously the conversation strategies acquired in the course to initiate, sustain, and end communication;
3) communicate with others effectively in various daily-life situations; and
4) express themselves in English more confidently.
