The Philosophy of Architectural Design

Course Target

The connection between architecture and philosophy appears at least on several levels. First of all, architecture is a special form of thought expression. Although it has its own special medium and method, it still relies on concepts as part of the thinking basis. Philosophy can deepen the understanding and operation of concepts, thereby promoting the thinking and expression of architecture design. The second is the mutual influence of architectural theory and philosophy. Architectural theory is closely related to the discussion of philosophical learning and often interacts with each other. As a basic subject of ideological exploration, philosophy can help students think more comprehensively about related problems in architectural theory. Third, the contemporary influence of philosophy on architectural practice. Since modern architecture, philosophy has increasingly shown its impact on architecture, especially in spatial concepts, exploration of perceptual experience, and application creation of concepts, providing rich theoretical resources and perspectives. This course tries to establish multiple relationships between building design and philosophy, while retaining open interpretation of ideas. Therefore, it is not to develop philosophical foundations from the perspective of architectural theory, but to develop from the reading and discussion of philosophical texts to extend the exploration of related issues involved in the architectural thought process. The three parts of this course structure are (1) philosophical scope and basic problems, (2) graphic learning methods, body and venue, and (3) contemporary philosophical text selection. These three parts contain subtopics that involve multiple concepts related to architectural thinking. On the one hand, it can provide the ideological basis for the discussion topics of the architecture design process, and at the same time, it can also deeply understand the impact of philosophical views on the construction reality, and further rethink architecture. It itself serves as a philosophical meaning of the form of expression of special thoughts, thereby expanding the design thinking and expression possibilities of the building. This course is an optional course for senior and research institutes in the university department. Each course will read, discuss and write philosophical texts, so as to expand the ideological perspectives and vision of students, cultivate basic research capabilities, and further reflect on the various aspects of the building itself. Nature meaning.

Course Description

This course aims to combine the goals cultivated by the department, improve students' critical thinking and verification capabilities, explore their initiation, influence and reference to the architecture design through philosophical texts related to the architecture, and further rethink how much weight a building design may bear Meaning. The content of this course is divided into the following three parts. (I) Philosophy and basic problems: Starting from basic knowledge such as philosophical overview, philosophical history and logic, we explore the philosophical scope and basic problems involved in the construction design process, including space, form, function and aesthetics, and establish philosophy and architecture, and Design the basics of dialogue. (II) Diagrammatic methods, body and venue: Based on the core texts of phenomenal learners such as Husser, Melodie and Heidegger, reflect on the profound impact of phenomenal learning on architectural thinking since the 20th century, and pay special attention to the body The importance of experience, perception and the meaning of the scene in design. (III) Contemporary philosophical text selection: In response to the problems or references of contemporary architecture, the course will select important texts of contemporary philosophers such as Li Ota, Fu Ke, Delez and Desheda, and explore the meaning of architecture. and stimulate students to re-examine the conceptual construction and thought creation process in architecture design from a philosophical perspective. Through the above planning, this course hopes to explore philosophical theories and methods to create multi-dimensional thinking of architecture design and provide creative and critical ideological foundations.
