The Philosophy of Architectural Design
Course Target
The connection between architecture and philosophy exists at least on several levels. The first is that architecture is a special form of ideological expression. Although it has its own special media and methods, it still relies on concepts as part of the basis for thinking. Philosophy can deepen the understanding and operation of concepts, thereby promoting the thinking and expression of architectural design. The second is the mutual influence of architectural theory and philosophy. Architectural theory is closely related to issues in many philosophical fields and is often intertwined with each other. As a basic subject for ideological exploration, philosophy can help students think more comprehensively about relevant issues in architectural theory. Third, the contemporary influence of philosophy on architectural practice. Since modern architecture, the influence of philosophy on architecture has become increasingly significant, especially in the discussion of space concepts, perceptual experience, and the application and creation of concepts, providing rich theoretical resources and perspectives.
This course attempts to establish multiple connections between architectural design and philosophy while retaining an open interpretation of ideas. Therefore, we do not seek the philosophical foundation from the perspective of architectural theory, but start from the reading and discussion of philosophical texts to extend the exploration of related issues involved in the architectural thought process. The three parts of this course structure are (1) philosophical categories and basic issues, (2) phenomenological methods, body and place, and (3) selected readings of contemporary philosophical texts. The sub-topics included in these three parts involve a variety of concepts related to architectural thinking. On the one hand, it can provide the ideological basis for discussing issues in the architectural design process. At the same time, it can also provide a deep understanding of the impact of philosophical perspectives on architectural practice. It can further rethink the philosophical meaning of architecture itself as a special form of expression of ideas, thereby expanding the design thinking and expression possibilities of architecture.
This course is an elective course for senior undergraduates and graduate students. Each class will include reading, discussion and writing of philosophical texts, in order to expand students' ideological perspectives and horizons, cultivate basic research abilities, and further reflect on the diverse significance of architecture itself.
Course Description
This course aims to improve students' critical thinking and dialectical abilities in conjunction with the department's training objectives. Through the discussion of philosophical texts related to architecture, it explores its inspiration, influence and reference on architectural design, and further rethinks the multiple meanings that architectural design may carry. The content of this course is divided into the following three parts. (1) Philosophical categories and basic issues: Starting from basic knowledge such as introduction to philosophy, philosophy history and logic, we will explore the philosophical categories and basic issues involved in the architectural design process, including issues such as space, form, function and aesthetics, and establish the basis for dialogue between philosophy and architectural design. (2) Phenomenological method, body and place: Based on the core texts of phenomenologists such as Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, this paper reflects on the profound influence of phenomenology on architectural thinking since the twentieth century, paying special attention to the importance of physical experience, perception and the meaning of place in design. (3) Selected Readings of Contemporary Philosophical Texts: In the face of issues considered or referenced by contemporary architecture, the course will select important texts by contemporary philosophers such as Lyotard, Foucault, Deleuze and Derrida to explore more possibilities of architectural meaning and inspire students to re-examine the conceptual construction and ideological creation process in architectural design from a philosophical perspective. Through the above planning, this course hopes to inspire students to think about architectural design in multiple dimensions through the discussion of philosophical theories and methods, and to provide a creative and critical ideological foundation.
