統計除了是社會學量化研究之基礎外，亦在市場調查、民意調查等領域有著廣泛的用途。本課程提供社會統計學的基礎知識，主要教授單一變項的描述統計與統計推論。課程將涵蓋變項測量、比較、圖形製作、集中趨勢、離散趨勢，並且涵蓋常態分配、抽樣、抽樣分配、估計與假設檢定、兩變項和多變項的統計推論部分，包含兩樣本假設檢定、卡方檢定、兩變項間之相關(含類別變項、等級變項、等距變項)、線性迴歸、變異數分析、多元迴歸、模型建構、羅吉斯迴歸等。此外本課程亦會教授目前應用程度最廣、取得最便利之統計軟體R，藉此建立修課同學之實作能力。在R教學部分，除了與統計課程配合，說明如何使用R進行統計分析外，本課程注重的是資料整理之方法，這是因為無論統計資料是來自資料庫或是由研究者自行蒐集，再進到統計分析步驟前，都必須要經過一系列的資料整理過程，而這個過程亦是統計分析的核心。
