II Advanced Ecology and Evolution II

Course Target

This is a required course for graduate students. The course may therefore be offered in English depending on the presence of international students. Since English is still the language of science and scientific practices, it is also of paramount importance for domestic students to be proficient at using English as a medium of communication. The course is aimed to provide graduate students broader and deeper understanding in Ecology and Evolution via discussions on scientific literatures. The course is also aimed to help students develop the ability of organizing and integrating pieces of knowledge that scattered across scientific literature, which is the first step to establish background of a given topic, discover the knowledge gaps, and devise a research project. Therefore, in this course, students are required to do a large amount of literature reading, share with the fellow students, and lead the discussion, either on assigned or self-chosen topics. The goal of this course is to deepen graduate students' understanding of the science, behavior and evolution, and to improve graduate students' scientific literacy and cultivation of graduate students' critical thinking ability through literary reading, class discussion and oral reports. This course will discuss related scientific topics from the perspectives of individuals, ethnic groups, clusters and ecological systems. Learning Objectives: 1) Deepen background knowledge in ecology, behavior and evolution. 2) Strengthen the critical thinking ability of classmates through literary reading, class discussion and oral reporting. 3) Strengthen scientific communication and discussion skills (especially in English).
