此課程主要是以系統分析（systems analysis）的角度教授都市史的通論以及都市歷史研究的方法理論，藉此讓課堂學習者有都市演變的通盤歷史知識，同時也對於都市形成與變遷的觀察能有學理性的分析技巧。
具體上，課程先教授人類發展於不同時期所建立的都市，除了認識其形態外也針對其社會經濟或文化構造上作理解，而採用的分析技巧則以建築類型學（tipologia edilizia）、型態學（urban morphology）等手法找出都市紋理（fabric/tissue）來作空間分析方法，藉此觀察空間中各種面向。除此之外，再以更大尺度的領域學（territorio）、聚落與都市地理（settlement and urban geography）等基礎理論理解都市單元與區域環境之關係，進而掌握大尺度空間的體系與網絡。於此同時，講授歷史視點，使 學生能夠不僅能分析空間物理性質，對於過去的文化累積及脈絡變遷也能掌握。文化/社會人類學、歷史學、地政學等理論是這階段學習的理論基礎。
課程並以專題方式講授，是以近年都市史研究熱門的主題方向與研究路徑作為課堂傳授重點，例如亞洲的殖民都市與資本化關係、人類發展中的整體城鎮化現象、水與都市形成發展的關係等。課堂並讓修習者選定都市史研究重要著作進行分析與研討。課程並安排移地教學，以實際田野訪查的方式來加深都市史的概念與印象。This course mainly teaches the general theory of urban history and the methodological theory of urban history research from the perspective of system analysis, thereby allowing classroom learners to have a comprehensive knowledge of urban evolution, and at the same time, they also have an ability to observe the formation and transformation of cities. Specifically, the course first teaches the city established by human development at different times. In addition to understanding its form, it also understands its social economy or cultural structure. The analytical skills used are architectural typing (tipologia edilizia) and typing. Learn (urban morphology) and other methods to find fabric/tissue as a space analysis method, so as to observe various aspects in the space. In addition, we can understand the relationship between urban units and regional environments through larger-scale domain learning, settlement and urban geography, and then master the system and network of large-scale spaces. At the same time, historical insights are taught so that students can not only analyze the physical properties of space, but also master the past cultural accumulation and structural changes. Theories such as culture/social human, history, land politics, etc. are the theoretical basis of this stage of learning.
The course is taught in a special way, and it is based on the theme direction and research paths of urban history research in recent years as the focus of classroom teaching, such as the relationship between colonial cities and capitalization in Asia, the overall urbanization phenomenon in human development, and the formation and development of water and urban areas. Relationships, etc. The class also allows practitioners to choose important works on urban history research for analysis and discussion. The course is arranged to move the ground to deepen the concept and impression of urban history through actual field visits.
