Sustainable Issues in Society
Course Target
This course is organized to address the major environmental and social challenges facing humanity, including competition for land use, loss of biodiversity, and the urgent need to maintain and preserve landscape resources. As a symbol of the integration of nature and culture, landscape resources not only record the interaction between human history and the geographical environment, but are also an important cornerstone of sustainable development. The course design closely echoes Goal 13 (Climate Action) and Goal 17 (Partnership to Promote Goal Achievement) of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the importance of landscape protection and combining environmental protection with diverse collaboration as the core concept. Students will understand the impact of tourism behavior on landscape resources through citizen science activities, combine the use of digital tools and implement the spirit of public participation, explore and promote the protection of sustainable landscape resources, and promote the conservation and sustainable use of landscape resources.
Course design focuses specifically on:
•Master the practical skills of VGI (citizen science) and public participation: Students will learn the core concepts of citizen science, participate in on-site environmental monitoring activities, collect and share data through VGI platforms (such as iTrail.com), and experience how to promote the protection of landscape resources through public participation.
•Understand the impact of recreational behaviors on landscape resources: By participating in public activities, students will observe and reflect on the impact of recreational behaviors on landscape resources, discuss related ecological challenges and management strategies, and explore how to mitigate the negative impacts of recreational behaviors through participatory methods.
•Explore the diverse relationship between culture and landscape: Combining anthropology, cultural studies and geographical information technology, students will have a deep understanding of the cultural connotation of landscape resources, explore the role of sense of place and memory in landscape conservation, and further understand the importance of cultural landscapes as common heritage.
•Promote sustainable management and social responsibility: The course guides students to think about how to use sustainable management practices to promote positive changes in society and the environment from the perspective of university social responsibility.
