教育目標 Course Target

"Fundamental Orchestration" 是一門大學部的學期課. 所有的學習由 score study 開始. 目標是裝備學生能看得懂, 聽得見, 並增加頭腦裏面的新曲目.

本課程主要的教材與組織方式是由授課者所提供的總譜以及指定書目上的內容為主. 開場是介紹各時代各種樂團的標準配器 (The History of Orchestra) 以及各家族樂器的基本發聲原理特性及演奏技巧 (Instrumentation), 再透過實際閱讀過去四百年具代表性的樂團總譜 (Score Study), 裝備學生具有閱讀管弦樂總譜最基本的能力. 並以不同配器為分類, 充實學生音聽的曲目. 曲目的選擇中在二十世紀中期以後至今, 並刻意提供音樂史課本尚未列入的代表性作曲家與其經典的作品.

為實現上述課程目標, 步驟如下:

1. instrumentation sheets: instrumentation, staging, specific instructions on scoring and performance

這個部分是由授課者所提供的實際總譜的 "instrumentation sheet". 制式的寫法建立於 18-19 世紀, 至20世紀開始帶入不同作曲者個別的配器組合, 記譜方法等.

2. score-reading excerpts: focus on instruments, instrumental combination, specific terminology/instructions

這個部分是由授課者所提供的譜例為主. 譜例依照 chronological order, 帶學生看從 Baroque 到現在的orchestral score.

3. instrumental families intro: textbook content, demo, examples/orchestral music excerpts

這個部分的主要參考資料是來自指定書目的解說與譜例. 除了 Samuel Adler 的書之外, Kent Kannan, Hector Berlioz (R. Strauss), 以及自由運用資源無限的 internet.


4. listening repertoire of four categories:
symphonic orchestra. string quartet. woodwind/ brass combo, percussion ensemble combo

這個部分是由授課者所提供的 listening lists 為主.



"Fundamental Orchestration" is a semester course in the undergraduate department. All learning begins with a score study. The goal is to equip students to understand, hear, and add new repertoire in their minds.

The main teaching materials and organization method of this course are based on the scores provided by the instructor and the contents of the designated books. It starts with an introduction to the standard orchestration of various orchestras in various eras (The History of Orchestra) and the basic sound principle characteristics and performance techniques of each family of instruments (Instrumentation). Then, through actual reading of representative orchestra scores in the past four hundred years (Score Study), students are equipped with the most basic ability to read orchestral scores. Different orchestrations are used as categories. Enrich students' listening repertoire. The selection of repertoire covers the period from the mid-20th century to the present, and deliberately provides representative composers and their classic works that are not included in music history textbooks.

To achieve the above course objectives, the steps are as follows:

1. instrumentation sheets: instrumentation, staging, specific instructions on scoring and performance

This part is the "instrumentation sheet" of the actual score provided by the instructor. The standard writing method was established in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 20th century, individual orchestration combinations and notation methods of different composers began to be introduced.

2. score-reading excerpts: focus on instruments, instrumental combination, specific terminology/instructions

This part is mainly based on the music examples provided by the instructor. The music examples follow the chronological order and take students to see the orchestral score from Baroque to the present.

3. instrumental families intro: textbook content, demo, examples/orchestral music excerpts

The main reference materials for this section are explanations and musical examples from the designated books. In addition to books by Samuel Adler, Kent Kannan, Hector Berlioz (R. Strauss), and the freely available resources of the internet.


4. listening repertoire of four categories:
symphonic orchestra. string quartet. woodwind/ brass combo, percussion ensemble combo

This section is dominated by listening lists provided by the instructor.
