Technology Controversies and Social Problems in Taiwan
Course Target
~~(Mackenzie and Wajcman, 1985)
Technology refers to knowledge (know-how). This knowledge is about using, designing, and repairing objects and hardware. Its transmission may be through visual images, observation, practice, and operation, or it may be taught orally and written and read (Mackenzie and Wajcman, 1985)
Michael Fischer, a professor at MIT, once wrote an introductory course module to STS, which shows the importance of STS in social science disciplines in recent years. In recent years, Science, Technology and Society (Science, Technology and Society (STS) research and technology and medicine (STM) have become very important sub-disciplines in Europe and the United States, occupying a certain weight in the emerging disciplines of sociology. The emergence of the field of science and technology and society is influenced by the sociology of knowledge, history of science, philosophy of science, medical sociology, feminist theory, poststructuralism, and postmodernism. It has the nature of interdisciplinary research and emphasizes social participation and implementation. STS's science and technology and society research emphasizes analyzing the intertwined and co-constructed relationship between science and technology and social culture, and exploring how science and technology interact with social life. It requires being close to the pulse of society and understanding the politics of science and technology. STS research emphasizes the need to respond to actual problems encountered, both local and global.
This course is based on Science, Technology and Society (STS) as its main theoretical basis. It cuts into various social issues in Taiwan through issues such as scientific controversy, scientific uncertainty, the politics of technological objects, and epidemiological controversies, allowing students to think about science and technology issues in Taiwanese society from multiple perspectives. Three themes are used as cases of social issues in Taiwan: 1. The politics of technological objects: visits to science museums and cases of appropriate technology. 2. The course is connected with local issues such as RCA, vaccines, and animal ecology, leading students to think about how to actually develop research and investigation methods. The course encourages students to think and examine from the perspectives of ecofeminism, environmental movements, and the relationship between animals and humans.
