Social Observation and Documentary Filming

教育目標 Course Target

*課程會進行分組實作,第一週必須出席分組。第一週未出席者無法參加此課程。
本課程的核心目標是希望以影像為媒介,藉由紀實的影像的創作,引導學生觀察社會現象,並嘗試拍攝人物故事而達到入圍觀察、架構觀點,用影像呈現自己的情感與想法。
為了達到上述目標,本課程設計的三個面向的單元:

單元一 認識紀錄片:了解紀錄片的發展歷程與本質特性,說明紀錄片的風格類型與其意義,讓同學對紀錄片有專業面向的基礎認識。

單元二 紀錄片與社會實踐:從紀錄片發展史中的具體影片案例,說明紀錄片在不同時期與社會背景下所產生的社會功能,讓同學知道拍攝紀錄片,可對社會提供哪些改變或助益。課程中也將針對台灣紀錄片的發展做說明,從台灣紀錄片的起源,綠色小組、全景映像工作室,直至現今紀錄片的趨勢作一概論,讓同學掌握台灣紀錄片與社會脈絡相互照映的發展精神。在此單元,學生亦需提出書面報告,說明自己將運用何種社會學概念觀察身邊的社會現象。

單元三 紀錄片專題創作:在實作方面,本學期將引導大家同學完成一部10-15分鐘左右的「人物觀察型紀錄片」,嘗試以影片作為表達想法的工具。
在課程中,我們將以「專案製作」的模式,帶領同學經歷企劃、田野調查、提案、拍攝、後製到公播的完整流程,讓同從實作中鍛鍊執行力。紀錄片是一門重視經驗的創作,每部影片可能都將面臨獨一無二的挑戰或倫理拿捏,因此課程中後段會有大量的小組討論,藉由師生討論,增進拍攝實務與社會應對進退的實戰經驗。

*The course will be implemented in groups, and you must attend the group sessions in the first week. Those who do not attend the first week will not be able to participate in this course.
The core goal of this course is to use images as a medium to guide students to observe social phenomena through the creation of documentary images, and try to shoot people's stories to achieve shortlisted observations, structure perspectives, and use images to express their own emotions and ideas.
In order to achieve the above goals, this course is designed with three oriented units:

Unit 1 Understanding Documentaries: Understand the development process and essential characteristics of documentaries, explain the style, type and significance of documentaries, so that students can have a professional and basic understanding of documentaries.

Unit 2 Documentary Film and Social Practice: Using specific film cases in the history of documentary development, we will explain the social functions of documentaries in different periods and social backgrounds, and let students know what changes or benefits documentary filming can provide to society. The course will also explain the development of Taiwanese documentaries, from the origins of Taiwanese documentaries, Green Group, Panoramic Image Studio, to the current documentary trends, so that students can grasp the development spirit of Taiwanese documentaries and social context. In this unit, students are also required to submit a written report explaining what sociological concepts they will use to observe the social phenomena around them.

Unit 3 Documentary Special Topic Creation: In terms of practice, this semester we will guide students to complete a "character observation documentary" of about 10-15 minutes, and try to use film as a tool to express ideas.
In the course, we will use the "project production" model to lead students through the complete process of planning, field investigation, proposal, shooting, post-production and public broadcast, so that students can practice their execution skills through practice. Documentary film is a creation that values ​​experience. Each film may face unique challenges or ethical considerations. Therefore, there will be a large number of group discussions in the middle and later stages of the course. Through discussions between teachers and students, practical experience in filming practices and social responses to advances and retreats will be enhanced.
