本課程旨在以「公共空間」為主題，結合當前人文地理學的空間理論、日治時期史料／研究文獻，及臺日兩地的案例研究，建立批判性探問的文化研究視角，引導修課學生思考日治時期台灣社會的日常生活如何與政治、資本權力所塑造出來的公共空間相互連結。

具體而言，本課程將以日治時期的臺灣社會作為主要研討對象，藉由城市性質的轉變、公共空間的自我展示、公共空間中的日常生活行為、地方／空間創生……等不同層次的議題來梳理殖民權力下所構建出來的公共空間與其間的文化想像。藉由討論這些議題，本課程將協助學生從日常生活周遭的「空間遺跡」中辨析臺灣近現代社會的公共空間發展過程如何日本的殖民進程相關，甚而進一步從後殖民的視角引導學生去探索日本帝國對於亞洲各地的空間形構與文化發展所帶來的影響。

在此脈絡下，本課程將分四部分進行，第一部分試圖構建學生關於空間與文化研究的相關理論，使其掌握基本的空間分析、研究能力；第二部分聚焦於戰前與戰後的空間性質轉變，引導學生探索臺灣公共空間的發展過程如何在不同政權交替的歷史進程中產生相互繼承、轉變，與混雜的結果；第三部分則以公共空間中的文化行為與意象作為主題，從旅行／風景、美術攝影／地方色彩、娛樂消費／城市意象四個切面來理解地方公共空間與文化行為之間的關係；最後，第四部分試圖以近年熱門的「地方創生」為主題，介紹臺灣於90年代興起的社區營造運動與日本近年興起的地方創生運動之間的連結及差異，進而思考臺日兩地不同社會所想像的「人與空間」的文化／社會差異。

This course aims to take "Public Space" as the theme, combine current spatial theories in human geography, historical materials/research documents from the Japanese colonial period, and case studies from Taiwan and Japan to establish a cultural research perspective of critical inquiry and guide students to think about how daily life in Taiwanese society during the Japanese colonial period is interconnected with the public space shaped by political and capital power.

Specifically, this course will take Taiwanese society during the Japanese occupation as the main research object, and sort out the public spaces constructed under colonial power and the cultural imagination within them through different levels of issues such as the transformation of urban nature, self-presentation of public spaces, daily life behaviors in public spaces, creation of places/spaces, etc. By discussing these issues, this course will help students analyze how the development process of public space in Taiwan's modern society is related to the Japanese colonial process from the "spatial relics" around daily life. It will even further guide students to explore the impact of the Japanese Empire on the spatial structure and cultural development of various parts of Asia from a post-colonial perspective.

In this vein, this course will be divided into four parts. The first part attempts to construct relevant theories about space and cultural research for students, so that they can master basic spatial analysis and research abilities; the second part focuses on the transformation of the nature of space before and after the war, and guides students to explore how the development process of Taiwan’s public space has resulted in mutual inheritance, transformation, and hybrid results in the historical process of the alternation of different regimes; the third part focuses on cultural behaviors and images in public space. The theme is to understand the relationship between local public space and cultural behavior from four aspects: travel/landscape, fine art photography/local color, entertainment consumption/urban image; finally, the fourth part attempts to use the popular theme of "place creation" in recent years to introduce the connections and differences between the community building movement that emerged in Taiwan in the 1990s and the place creation movement that emerged in Japan in recent years, and then think about the cultural/social differences in "people and space" imagined by different societies in Taiwan and Japan.
