A Seminar in Sensual Sociology

Course Target

Purpose of teaching

Continuing the spirit of Enlightenment, Western thought often opposes the two perceptive abilities of "emotion" and "rationality", and regards the latter as far more valuable than the former in terms of the good development of human nature and society. If emotions are not perfectly supervised by rational thinking, they may create personal and even social chaos. The above-mentioned seemingly self-evident presuppositions have also profoundly affected the problem awareness, research methods, and theoretical construction of "social science." One of its implicit ultimate purposes is to further refine our rational thinking, and analyze social problems and the laws of social operation based on this, and put forward specific and effective policy suggestions. However, Michel Foucault's series of studies have already shown that so-called rational knowledge and national governance plans constructed based on it have from time to time produced unexpected "irrational" effects - what's more, the source of driving so-called rational inquiry is likely to be emotional and sensory. How can we understand the relationship between sensibility and reason more realistically? In addition, is the identification of which is better and worse between the two itself a false proposition?

In response to the above questions, the "sensory turn" (or "emotional turn") has recently emerged in the humanities and social sciences. Turn), this course aims to respond to the aforementioned questions and hopes to cultivate the students' sensory experience and analytical skills. This course has the following five major themes: "The Capitalist History of Sugar Addiction," "Food Taste and Cultural Society," "Consciousness, Subconsciousness, and Subjectivity," "Visual Experience," and "The Anthropocene and Multispecies." We will explore these topics from the perspectives of taste, vision, pain, touch, and hearing.

Grading method: mid-term exam (20%) + final exam (80%), mainly based on the application topic; those who are absent from class more than twice will be considered failed.
