Teaching the subject
In the spirit of continuous enlightenment, Western thought often opposes two perception abilities of "sensibility" and "rationality", and sees the latter's value as far as the good development of human nature and society is concerned. If sentiment is not subject to the perfect supervision of rational thinking, it may create personal or even social confusion. The above-mentioned self-evident preview also deeply affects the problem consciousness, research methods, and theoretical construction of "social science". One of the ultimate goals it implies is to more refined our rational thinking, and to analyze social problems and the laws of social operation, and to put forward specific and effective policy suggestions. However, Michel Foucault's series of studies have long shown that so-called rational knowledge and the national governance plan constructed accordingly have produced unexpected "irrational" effects - what's more, the source of so-called rational exploration is likely to be emotional and sensory. How can we understand the relationship between sentimentality and rationality more effectively? In addition, is the difference between which one is better and which one is inferior?
In response to the above questions, the humanities and social sciences community has recently become more and more excited about the "sensory turn" (or "emotion turn" (Affect Turn), this course aims to respond to the above questions and hope to cultivate the sensory and analytical abilities of students in the course. This course has the following five topics: "The History of Sugar's Capitalism", "Food Food Flavor and Culture Society", "Identity, Pointing, Subjectivity", "Visual Experience", "Human World and Multiple Species". We will explore these topics through the perspectives of taste, vision, pain, touch and hearing.
Scoring method: midterm exam (20%) + final exam (80%), mainly apply for the application topic; those who have passed two classes will fail.
