Entomology

Course Target

1) Understand insect diversity and recognize common insects around you
2) Understand the design and function of insect bodies
3) Be exposed to some of the amazing survival and reproduction strategies of insects
4) Understand the major evolutionary trends within insects
5) Know how insects affect our daily life. Entomology is a branch of biological science. It not only plays an important role in agriculture and epidemiology, but is also closely related to human daily life and is an indispensable basic knowledge. This course, taught primarily to life science students, provides a general introduction to insects. Topics covered include the diversity of insects, the interrelationships between important insect structures (morphology) and functions (physiology), insect ecology and behavior, and considerations of the economic and medical importance of insects, in the form of presentations and lectures. Introduce the basic concepts of entomology, the origin and evolution of life. It is hoped that it can help students understand what factors allow insects to successfully reproduce on the earth and appreciate the diversity of insect forms and behaviors. It is also hoped that it can widely develop students' interest in animals other than humans as future research topics. Through the introduction of this course, everyone can recognize the common insects around them and understand their biology and unique adaptations.

Course Description

Insects are the most abundant and diverse animals on earth. About five out of every six animals on land are insects. Is the huge number and diversity of insects just a coincidence, or is there a reason? If the diversity of insects is not accidental, can we find the reason through the many characteristics of insects' internal structure, physiology, genesis, and life history? What is the key to insect evolution? Exploring why insects are so important in nature will be one of the themes of this course.
The purpose of this course is to introduce college students to the dizzying diversity and habits of insects through lectures and readings. This course will explore the bizarre biology of insects by examining their evolutionary history, internal structure, occurrence, feeding habits, life history strategies, behaviors, and long-term interactions with humans (both positive and negative).
