近代物理指的是20世紀(1900年以後）所發展出的物理，與1900年以前所發展的古典物理有相當大的不同。因此將先介紹此物理原理發現的歷史與思想背景，然後說明新物理原理之內容，進而討論由實驗證明此原理的結果，並提出問題與同學討論。近代物理對現代生活和科技有極重大的影響，例如相對論的影響有天文學、太空探測、宇宙觀、核能發電、核戰威脅、…等；而量子力學的影響有半導體工程、電腦、雷射、光譜、光電工程、光纖通訊、網際網路、光資訊、原子分子物理、材料、化學、化工、能源科技、…等。
