Curating Literature: Theory and Practice

Course Target

This course aims to cultivate the "curating power" of literary people. "Curatorial power" is an important ability in the "cultural and creative era". "Curating as Writing" has become an emerging concept. Therefore, "curated works" can be included as a type of literary and artistic "creation". In this concept, curators are also creators. Just like the identity of "writer", "curator" is also an identity that literature students can gradually establish during their studies. Through this activity, we hope to help students begin to explore the possibility of establishing this identity. Traditionally, the main job of a curator is to select exhibits, arrange exhibitions, arrange narratives, and write exhibition introductions to convey the creator's ideas. But in the 21st century, the curator's job is no longer to help viewers understand the creator's ideas or creative context, but to assemble works, give perspectives, and establish narratives. In the discourse context presented by the curator across media and fields, different works are included in the discourse network, generating their significance and value in the network, and the curator is the creator. The "curatorship" developed in this course can be widely used in a variety of workplaces and fields, such as exhibition planning in museums, cultural promotion activities in cultural institutions and non-profit organizations, product display in brand promotion and marketing in the commercial field, and planning brands. Events, online exhibitions on media and digital platforms, editing or operating social media pages; "curatorship" can also be used in teaching, as well as in the publishing field of print books, magazines or online media, such as selecting and arranging content, and formulating the overall theme. Curators are required to have abilities in the areas mentioned above, such as creative thinking, project management, communication skills and in-depth understanding of culture. These abilities are the key to the success of various activities.
