這是一門理論課程。複合媒體的認知基礎來自於當代觀念藝術系統，根源於杜象及達達，企圖打破藝術與生活的界線；亦受到日本50年代具體群（Gutai group）事件的影響，
主要是指興起於1970年代的西方當代藝術類型，以裝置藝術（Installation art）為主。混用各種媒材及現成物（ready-made），直接使用展場空間，
創造感知和概念性的經驗，故涵蓋特定場域的藝術（Site-specific art）、地景藝術（Land Art）。使用的媒材包含了自然材料到新媒體，
如錄影、聲音、行為、電腦以及網路等。本課程需從概念藝術系統出發，講述當代複合媒體/裝置藝術的歷史，透過作品之介紹及討論，
讓學生了解當代複合媒體及裝置藝術之創作觀念及型態，作為當代藝術發展之獨特路徑；並使學生探討、思考媒體特性和與傳統美學的差異，以發展出創作或論述的潛力。
