本課程旨在通過情境評賞的角度認識西方自史前時代至現代藝術初期的發展脈絡，當中自原始藝術到文藝復興以至現代藝術各時期的藝術特色、風格和代表作品的評賞，讓學生瞭解藝術起源和演變的情境因素，提升對於西方藝術作品的審美素養，並藉此增強個人藝術創作與社會、環境、個人之間的脈絡關係。
同時通過對特定主題、作品、時代氛圍或藝術家的資料蒐集與閱讀，書寫成具備基本學術價值的學期報告，藉以養成學術研究的基礎能力。This course aims to understand the developmental structure of the West from prehistoric times to the early stages of modern art from the perspective of situational evaluation, and to review the artistic characteristics, styles and representative works of various periods from primitive art to literary revival and even modern art, so that students can understand the art characteristics, styles and representative works of the arts in various periods, so as to allow students to understand the The situational factors of art origin and evolution enhance the aesthetic cultivation of Western art works, and thereby enhance the relationship between personal art creation and society, environment, and individuals.

本課程的主要範圍在討論西方藝術從史前時代到18世紀的巴洛克(Baroque)。授課內容以繪畫史的發展，配合不同時代的文明旁及於建築與雕塑的討論。
