This course focuses on the history of Chinese and Western theater. The first half of the course uses Chinese opera as the teaching content, from the original appearance of elementary opera to how contemporary opera is combined with contemporary theater aesthetics. As a cross-disciplinary comprehensive performance, the biggest feature of opera is the combination of poetry and dance, and it is based on lyricism. In addition to performing plots, it pays more attention to the expression of emotions and to arouse the resonance of the audience. In addition, opera’s unique industry system (such as Shengdan Jingmo Chou), freehand expression techniques (such as one table and two chairs), and rich forms that combine various performing arts (singing, juggling, science, etc.) , are all its moving features and connotations. This course will lead students to understand the origin, development and changes of Chinese drama, as well as drama works and theater expressions in different periods. It is hoped that through the outline of the history of drama, students can lay a foundation of relevant knowledge. On the one hand, they can understand the characteristics of drama in various periods, or they may also accumulate and touch energy and inspiration for future creation in the process of viewing and dialogue.
The second half of the course focuses on exploring the development of Western drama, as well as its representative performance forms and famous creations. The course has three objectives: 1. To guide students to gain an in-depth understanding of the connections between various Western performance forms. 2. Develop students’ problem awareness and research perspective on Western theater. 3. Lead students to analyze the artistic and aesthetic heritage of Western theater.
