Tunghai University received the “Keepin it Modern” Grant from the Getty Foundation in the United States from 2014 to 5. In addition to conducting a research project on the preservation and restoration of cultural assets of the Lucien Church, it also Unexpectedly, it opened the door to the preservation of cultural assets of postwar modern architecture in Taiwan. To date, more than 30 modern buildings in Taiwan that were built after World War II have been listed as cultural assets in different capacities. In addition to the Lucien Church on the Tunghai University campus, which has been listed as a "National Monument" with the highest level, the original Art Center, the Pyrrhus Bell Tower, and the Methodist Hall have also been designated as Taichung Municipal Monuments and Municipal Historic Buildings respectively; before the 1970s The location of the completed campus buildings was also designated as a cultural landscape in the name of "Early Campus". In the future, it will be preserved and maintained for a long time under the legal status of the Cultural Assets Preservation Act.
Before the start of construction of the Luce Church at the end of 2022, the Department of Architecture of Tunghai University, under the concept of "preservation management planning", used the "original art center" (which has gone through legal procedures in the investigation and reuse plan to be completed in 2021 Tentatively scheduled to be the future "Tunghai University Vision Hall"), we are imagining how to make the renovation of Taiwan's first post-war modernist building to receive national monument status no longer a closed maintenance site, waiting to be reopened to the outside world after renovation. ; On the contrary, students are familiar with the cultural importance aspects of classic modern buildings such as Lucius Church through previous research projects, and how to translate them through a full-day work camp into the public who can and care about the development of artistic and cultural activities. The formal language of dialogue and the construction process led the students to actively work with the Ministry of Culture of the Central Government and the Bureau of Cultural Heritage in charge of the national monument preservation business, and strive to seek social education teaching materials for the preservation of rare cultural assets by treating the restoration process as a rare cultural asset. The solo exhibition on the restoration of the Lucius Church held in the Art Center, the accompanying physical construction workshop, and the guided tour of the restoration site opened at the right time. More than 1,500 people had the opportunity to understand modern times in the different ways it was designed and arranged. The cultural importance and preservation of buildings. For Tunghai University, a university with a special campus and most of which are designated as "cultural landscapes with cultural asset status", this means that the school has actively launched cultural activities in addition to the "honor". Social education for asset preservation.
During the renovation of the Luce Church, Tunghai University faced another major event in the preservation of cultural assets: the president's residence "Kangdon Building", which was built during the tenure of the second president Wu Tak-yao, received a large donation from the eldest daughter of President Wu. , hoping to use detailed investigation and research to restore the collective memory of the campus life that took place inside and outside Condon Building in the past, and to seek appropriate repair principles and reuse methods; the current President Zhang also readily agreed to move out of Condon Building in order to Li Jin's research team can carefully investigate and study. Since Kangdon Building is located in the middle area of the school's male and female dormitories and staff dormitories, there are three familiar and frequently used medium-sized open spaces around it: the vast sun lawn, the moonlight lawn and the pine forest. The nearby guest house is also idle and low. After many years of use, the Methodist Hall has been transformed into a small hotel with design hotel properties that can be operated by external parties. In addition to the "Methodist Hall Front Building" which has obtained the status of "Municipal Historic Building", there are also the Ming Xian Hall, post office, mailbox square, school pastor's office, and infirmary within a radius of 100 meters from Condon Building. (currently renamed "Health Center"), the guest house, and the Kangtun Building itself. All the campus buildings in this area designed by Chen Qikuan and Zhang Zhaokang have long been recognized by the domestic architectural circles as the starting point for the development of modern architecture in post-war Taiwan. A classic. Therefore, the investigation and reuse plan of Condon House obviously has the opportunity to not only be an investigation and research plan of a single classic modern building, but its reuse can actually be placed at a higher height and a larger building. perspective to begin with.
Taiwan’s presidential election in early 2024 also gave the aforementioned “broader” and broader self-expectations an opportunity to expand their thinking: During the campaign, the current 16th President Lai Ching-te proposed what he would do if he took office. "Cultural Policy White Paper"; in it, it is clearly stated that after taking office, he will continue to promote the "reconstruction of historical sites" promoted by the previous minister during his tenure, and define the new reconstruction in version 2.0 with the cultural vision of "cultural sustainability, world Taiwan" Historical Site Project. The "Reconstructing Historical Sites" originally supported by the Qianzhan Special Budget will be upgraded to a regular "Regional Cultural Preservation" plan in "Reconstructing Historical Sites 2.0". It will also strengthen the regulatory system of the Cultural Assets Law and improve private cultural assets. preservation incentives.
For Tunghai University, which has already designated most of its campus as "cultural landscape," this expanding cultural policy gives us an opportunity to get out of the mountain of generosity. And how to develop a new set of discourse and reuse plans based on the value of modern cultural assets on campus that has been affirmed, so that the existing "cultural landscape" is no longer just a simple higher education institution with history. The campus and campus buildings can be brought into public meaning from the re-examined and redefined cultural values. They are included in the Reconstruction of Historical Sites 2.0 project and receive long-term and continuous maintenance and preservation. They are the "urban and rural areas" of this semester. The core concerns and problem awareness of the "Planning and Design" course.
