Affect Studies
Course Target
In the spirit of continuous enlightenment, Western thought often opposes two perception abilities of "sensibility" and "rationality", and sees the latter's value as far as the good development of human nature and society is concerned. If sentiment is not subject to the perfect supervision of rational thinking, it may create personal or even social confusion. The above-mentioned self-evident preview also deeply affects the problem consciousness, research methods, and theoretical construction of "social science". One of the ultimate goals it implies is to more refined our rational thinking, and to analyze social problems and the laws of social operation, and to put forward specific and effective policy suggestions. However, Michel Foucault's series of studies have long shown that the so-called rational knowledge and the national governance plan constructed accordingly have produced no expected "irrational" effects - what's more, the source of so-called rational exploration is likely to be emotional. How can we understand the relationship between sentimentality and rationality more effectively? In addition, is the difference between which one is better and which one is inferior?
In response to the above questions, the humanities and social sciences community has recently become more and more excited about the "emotional turn" (or "emotional turn"). Social science, philosophy, cultural research and other fields have been subject to Raymond Williams, Gilles Deleuze, and Eve. Sedgwick and other pioneers have driven researchers to develop, and they not only change their forms but also interact with each other, but often interact with the body and lead to social changes. In other words, emotions are the shaping elements of sociality. This course starts with classic articles by the above three key students, and then uses three classic research books to discuss the relationship between emotions, sociality and social changes.
