Seminar: Philosophy of Mental Disorders

Course Target

This course discusses mental illness from the perspective of philosophy, especially the perspective of British and American philosophy. Students in the course should note that the current planning of the course may still change, so students must attend the first class; the specific course content and rating methods will be based on the explanation in the first class. As planned at the moment, we will carefully study Sam Wilkinson's work on how to discuss mental illness from philosophy and choose to read some other articles. The topics involved in these works can be divided into at least three categories. The first is the metaphysical problem about mental illness. For example, does the distinction between mental illness and non-psychiatric illness correspond to two different visual phenomena, or are they only based on people who are involved in a specific social connection? Furthermore, to understand mental illness properly, do we have to imagine the essence of rationality, belief, and emotion in a way different from the tradition in philosophy? The second is the intellectual discourse problem and scientific philosophy problem about mental illness. The most profound field of knowledge in the study of mental illness is not the most influential field of knowledge. However, how should we understand the knowledge that psychiatry provides? For example, should these knowledge be considered to involve purely descriptive knowledge without any value judgment? In addition, is the description of the theoretical transformation process in scientific philosophy suitable for psychiatry? Finally, reflection on mental illness will also lead to some ethics problems. These questions are extensive, so this course will be discussed within a relatively limited range. I look forward to my classmates to maintain an open attitude and consider the possibility of dialogue between philosophy and spiritual medicine.
