Seminar: Philosophy of Mental Disorders

Course Target

This course discusses mental illness from a philosophical perspective, with a particular emphasis on the perspective of British and American philosophy. Students taking the course should note that the current course plan may still change, so students must attend the first class; the specific course content and scoring method will be subject to the instructions in the first class. As currently planned, we will look closely at Sam Wilkinson's work on how to discuss mental illness from a philosophical perspective, as well as select other articles. The issues covered in these works can be divided into at least three categories. The first is the metaphysical question about mental illness. For example, does the distinction between mental illness and non-mental illness correspond to two objectively different phenomena, or is it just an artificial distinction that relies on a specific social context? Furthermore, to properly understand mental illness, must we conceive of the nature of reason, belief, and emotion in a different way than is traditional in philosophy? Secondly, there are the epistemological issues and scientific philosophy issues about mental illness. For the study of mental illness, the field of knowledge that has had the most profound impact is psychiatry. However, how should we understand the knowledge provided by psychiatry? For example, should this knowledge be regarded as purely descriptive knowledge that does not involve any value judgments? In addition, does the description of the theoretical transformation process in the philosophy of science apply to psychiatry? Finally, reflection on mental illness will also lead to some ethical issues. These issues are so broad that this course will only discuss them within a relatively limited scope. We hope that students will have an open mind and consider the possibility of dialogue between philosophy and psychiatry.
