When philosophical history is studied as history, it is part of the history of thought and the history of philosophical thoughts. When philosophical history is studied as philosophy, we are studying the history of philosophy as philosophy, and we explore their propositions and evidence of important philosophical problems through reading the works of influential philosophers in history. Philosophical problems are the study of philosophy problems, not the history of thought. Therefore, this course is concerned with the answers of philosophers to important philosophical problems in the past, and philosophical history provides resources for solving these philosophical problems. Under this meaning, this class explores Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Mill, Russell, and Ayer's answers to important philosophical questions about spirit, language, rationality, science, innate concepts, objects, numbers , causal relationship, law, knowledge, freedom, identity and personality, etc. In history, these philosophers have been called British experientialists, and, roughly, they jointly maintain such an initiative: without pre-experienced metaphysical knowledge, all concepts come from experience. We do not have any knowledge unless we have experienced knowledge.
