本課程以全球化(Globalization)形成的歷史為經緯,來探討近代世界發展所要面對的各種社會與政治問題,全球化的肇端是起於大航海時代,台灣是在此時被納入在世界的體系之內,荷蘭東印度公司治理台灣,其背景是在資本主義的醞釀過程中大航海的投資家、銀行體系與股票市場的建立一連串交互作用的結果。世界在全球化的過程中被壓縮了起來,1830年代中南美洲的獨立運動造成了世界的銀荒,誘發了中國的太平天國之亂、西班牙大流感到現今新冠的疫情更是全球性的流動……怎樣從歷史的角度理解當今世界的形成,是本課程的首要方式;其次,法蘭西斯福山(Francis Fukuyama)曾說:「歷史已經終結」這是從發展方向上認為自由民主制將成為人類後續政體的主要模式。工業革命對生產與勞動制度的影響,法國大革命揭櫫的自由、平等、博愛的精神,是奠基在中產階級的鼓吹與參與;從民族國家的形成到殖民主義的昂揚,各種世界發展的主要格局逐漸形成;第三、以歐洲為中心的世界觀,挾科學文明對於世界其他區域造成各種衝擊,文明與文化價值的裂變與重組、再造成為歷史的主旋律。我們要怎樣看待這些過去?又有什麼樣的結構持續影響到現在?從長時段、大歷史的角度去觀照世界上現今仍然要面對的諸多議題,將會讓學生有更寬廣的國際視野和對未來世界更多不同脈絡的省思。This course uses the history of globalization as its latitude and longitude to explore various social and political issues faced by the development of the modern world.
