This course has four goals. First, by taking statistics, students will achieve a milestone in mathematical literacy. They will make the psychological jump away from the deterministic mathematics encountered in algebra and calculus, into a more general framework that includes random influences. Second, students will gain a foundation for later application of statistical methods, whether on the job or in graduate programs. Third, students will develop a forensic mindset, making them critical consumers of the statistics reported in newspapers, journals, and other sources. Fourth, students will practice applying statistical methods using Excel and R software.
