Architectural Theories

Course Target

Course description The purpose of research is to gain knowledge. The purpose of the course "Architectural Theory" is to establish the habit of "independent research". Research is a systematic and purposeful review of known things, and then generates new knowledge in the process of integration. Design behavior is a process of knowledge production. Architectural design can be said to be "reflection-in-action". During the design process, every architect ruminates on the known and explores the unknown from time to time. It can also be said that from the first design class, we have already begun to engage in the production of architectural knowledge. However, architecture is not only an art field, but also includes natural sciences and humanities. Different fields of knowledge production have different traditions. Such differences, coupled with the separation of the so-called basic disciplines and applied sciences, have played a vital role in the modernity project. Under the social division of labor system, it has been difficult to achieve integration. Such separation becomes more serious under the prejudice of "architecture as a history of style": once architecture becomes a linear evolution of formal samples, we cannot take into account the ordinary people's lives in the corner and the unique modernity of different regions. The role of architectural theory is to provide a dialogue interface, allowing the architect not only to discuss his long-term training expertise (that is: the integration of different forms, contents, materials and analytical perspectives), but also to communicate with sociology, anthropology, ecology Interactive influences in different fields such as science and geography. In the era of the rise of productive artificial intelligence, familiarity with theory allows us to "ask the right questions", flexibly switch between different perspectives through "prompts", and build future innovations on past understandings. In view of this, this course will adopt a dual-track approach of seminars and lectures, hoping to generate understanding through cross-fertilization and thus prepare for more profound knowledge production in future professional careers.

Course Description

The main teaching content of this course is roughly divided into two parts: (1) Dialectics of architectural significance: including the discussion of two key topics: "Chapter 1: Dialectics from rational aesthetics to mechanical aesthetics" and "Chapter 2: Thoughts on architectural paradigms and paradigm transfer". (2) Model of the essence of interpretation: including "Chapter 3: Personal Re-Hermeneutics of the Essential Meaning of Phenomenon", "Chapter 4: Communication Mode of Place Perception and Architectural Pragmatic Freedom" and "Chapter 5: Ideology and Architecture Discussion on three key issues including "Teacher's Social Role Positioning". Through the exploration of the dialectics and interpretation models of the meaning and essence of architecture in the two parts mentioned above, it is expected that a more rigorous architectural discussion connotation can be established.
