Japanese culture became one of the most powerful cultures from the late 20th century to the early 21st century, and many cultural achievements have become world-class cultural phenomena. In the field of architecture, Japan's unique spatial beauty, detailed design, and even the sustainability and environmental care of architecture have had a profound impact on the world; and in the spring of 2024, the Pulitzer Prize, an annual event in the international architecture industry, will be announced. The award was won by Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto, making Japanese architecture further lead the world in the number of Pulitzer Prize winners. Exactly 100 years ago, Kobe Bryant published "Towards Architecture" in Paris to elaborate on the "new spirit" of architecture that he understood. The book has also become a must-have handbook for students of modern architecture in the past century. In Tokyo in the same year, Japanese architects were faced with the first year after the Great Kanto Earthquake. The process of post-disaster demobilization implied a renewed attempt by Japanese architecture to get rid of Western styleism. If we all agree that the Pulitzer Prize represents the value recognized by the international architectural community, the frequent awards received by Japanese architects can be said to represent the latest value orientation of modern architecture after a century of development. Therefore, it makes people think about what considerations must be paid attention to in Japanese architecture? The Pulitzer Prize, which represents the value of modern architecture that has grown up in Western culture, does the fact that Japan has the largest number of architects in the world reveal something that needs to be studied deeply? How Japanese architecture can be recognized or even surpassed in the modern world with Western values as its core is a topic worthy of in-depth exploration by those of us in non-Western European countries. In view of this, this course focuses on Japanese architecture and urbanism in the 20th century. It uses the Pulitzer Prize-winning Japanese architects over the years as the anchor point of time. Through key architectural events, it leads students to understand the development of modern Japanese architecture and explains the development of modern Japanese architecture. Generate context and characteristics, and further explore the cultural meaning behind it.
