By studying the "history of architecture" in modern times, we are not only acquiring "history", but also studying "design". This course will try to connect with various issues that students from the Department of Architecture may have when studying architectural design. Through the explanation of classic works in the history of modern architecture, we will work with students to find possible answers. The "architecture" to be discussed in the modern architectural history course is not only a work (building), but also a design operation, and more importantly, an understanding and reflection on the spirit of the times. On top of this, global history has become the mainstream of history today. How the complex history of architecture transcends regions and provides students with a global understanding is an important topic of this course. Therefore, this course will be told from the diachronic and synchronic standpoints of the history of consciousness.
This course will be divided into two stages. Modern Architectural History (1) will take "decoration" as the core topic. Through the understanding of decoration in modern architecture, it will organize and further weave a grasp of the development context of modern architecture. Specifically, this course will start from the transformation of architectural concepts and design works since the 19th century, and understand modern architecture from a relatively macroscopic and overlooking perspective through the mutual dialogue between the two worlds of Europe and East Asia. On the other hand, Modern Architectural History (II), which is listed as an elective, turns to a microscopic perspective and uses "nature" as the core topic to clarify the understanding of architecture. Specifically, Modern Architectural History (2) focuses on the ideas and remarks of important architects in the development context of modern architecture, supplemented by statements about their works and overall context, for in-depth reading and discussion. It is hoped that students who take this course can capture the relationship between architecture and nature in the development of modern architecture through the multiple connections and dialectics between architectural thinking, design operations, works and the context of the times, and gradually refine their own understanding and imagination of architecture.
Architecture in this course is both an operation and a theoretical reflection.
This course will compare the technical skills of architectural design and explain how architects of various generations appropriate knowledge, technology and experience from other contemporary fields, think about various traditional or contemporary problems, and develop corresponding operating systems; help students learn such Practical experience, on the operational side, provides some inspiration for dealing with immediate problems. Whether consciously or not, all architects must presuppose some kind of "theory" that "constructs the relationship between the form of an architectural work... and its social context or context" in order to connect operations and contexts and construct the meaning of their professional practice. Discussing how different examples connect the context and operations will help us to infer the "theory" that connects our own profession and the real world. Based on the above, we divide the specific content of the [Modern Architectural History] course into the following three themes──
1. The context of architecture and modernity: From a historical perspective, examine the context of global or local architectural development issues.
2. Modern architectural thinking and operation: Introducing the thinking, operation and construction of modern architecture in terms of genres, characters, works and documents.
3. Theory of knowledge and historical perspective: Reflect on and construct your own theory against the context of modern cognition and mechanism.
In the first semester, we will discuss case studies, supplemented by general operational explanations, to help second-year students who have just started to practice practical architectural design. They will start by "reading architecture" and gradually become familiar with the complexity of design concepts and practical operations. correspond. In the second semester of elective electives, we will have in-depth discussions on some topics in the development of modern architecture. We hope that elective students can think about the multiple connections between operations and contexts, understand what they are doing, and have a better understanding of what they are doing. role in the real world. In addition to midterm and final exams, there are three written reports in each semester; in principle, there are three hours of extracurricular discussion time on Tuesday evening. Students who choose this course must have taken [Architectural Design Exercises (4)].
