Course Objective: The goal of this course is to read past scholars’ research on Taiwan’s social development process to understand the important aspects and development of Taiwan’s politics, economy, and society. By comparing various research viewpoints, this course hopes that students can understand the particularity of Taiwan in social development, and discuss through critical thinking the aspects or cognitive blind spots that may be overlooked by these viewpoints, so as to explore emerging research in these related fields. direction.
Course Overview: Marx believed that changes in the lower structure (economics) will cause changes in the upper structure (politics, culture, thought, etc.). This course uses Taiwan as a field of experience to discuss how Taiwan's postwar economic development process has affected the current trends and evolution of social thought. Past sociological research has often ignored how the two structural variables of "time" and "space" affect social changes. This course hopes to think about Taiwan's situation in East Asia through a review of various literature on Taiwan's economic history and social history. Why is it special? And the focus of discussion is on the development process of post-war Taiwan. In addition, in order to have a deeper understanding of post-war Taiwan, the first three weeks of this article will briefly review the characteristics of Taiwan's economic development during the Dutch, Qing, and Japanese colonial periods, as a prerequisite for understanding post-war development. This article will then discuss various theoretical and empirical studies that analyze Taiwan's postwar economic development process as an analytical framework for thinking about Taiwan's future innovation possibilities.
