According to statistics on arts and cultural performances from the Ministry of Culture, in 2022, approximately 244.57 million people in Taiwan participated in 54,036 activities involving visual arts, crafts, design, music, drama, dance, rap, film, folklore, language, books, variety shows, etc. , among them, there are 487 museum units with exhibition as their core business, according to the latest "Taiwan Museum Directory" statistics from the Museum Society of the Republic of China, with an average of 20.66 museums per million people in the broad sense, which is much higher than the U.N.S. According to statistics from the Cultural Organization (UNESCO), there are 4.3 museums per million people in the Asia-Pacific region, which shows that the social influence of museums in Taiwan deserves attention.
This course explores the relationship between museums and society from the perspectives of sociology and museology, introduces the role of museums as social institutions, and uses cases to illustrate their impact on culture, identity and memory, and how they are shaped by the above three. How to systematically understand the museum and make the museum display a social communication platform that includes multiple users/stakeholders (based on which to exchange opinions, negotiate, make decisions, implement and review, promote dialogue among different groups and form a consensus, and then Transforming consensus into social practices that try to solve social problems and improve the environment), or criticize social phenomena, may be one of the important abilities needed by today's citizens. Through theoretical readings, case discussions, and museum field trips, students will understand the role of museums in society and begin to practice critically analyzing the social, political, and cultural aspects of museums and their significance in contemporary society.
