陳映真的文學創作是現實主義的，隨時關注著當代台灣社會的重要問題。從1950年代以來的國際冷戰，1960年代的中西文化與現代詩論戰，1970年代的保釣運動、鄉土文學論戰，1980年代的跨國資本與全球化，乃至1990年代以來對理想主義的歷史回顧與反思，都深刻地反映在陳映真的小說作品中。這些影響著當代台灣社會的重要社會議題論，陳映真猶如社會學家那樣地思考與分析著。通過閱讀陳映真的小說，得以激發我們重新認識和思考這些社會議題。
陳映真又是繼承傳統和面向傳統的。比如說，陳映真曾經提到要“更好地學習楊逵精神，做好楊逵先生的學生自勉。＂這不僅在繼承日據時期台灣文學的寫實主義傳統的意義上，還在民族團結意義上接續和開展反帝反殖的傳統。陳映真更是力行實踐，在1985年創辦的《人間》雜誌，這份雜誌廣泛而深入地報導和關懷勞工、農民、原住民、以及環境等議題。《人間》雖然只發刊5年左右，卻影響了無數的學子。如今重讀發刊詞：“我們盼望透過「人間」，使彼此陌生的人重新熱絡起來；使彼此冷陌的社會，重新互相關懷；使相互生疏的人，重新建立對彼此生活與情感的理解；使塵封的心，能夠重新去相信、希望、愛和感動，共同為了重新建造更適合人所居住的世界，為了再造一個新的、優美的、崇高的精神文明，和睦團結，熱情地生活。＂依然讓人有熱切的共鳴。
這門課的企圖是，藉由閱讀陳映真的小說和視角，對戰後台灣的和區域的歷史和社會思潮進行探索與重新認識。主要閱讀材料是陳映真數十年來的小說創作，課前務必細讀文本，寫下閱讀心得，作為每次上課討論和學期報告寫作的基礎。每次上課進行方式是同學分組討論，引言報告，教師總結討論。學期成績來自學期報告50%、電影心得25%，以及讀書筆記數篇佔25%。學期報告在期末由每位同學以口頭報告後繳交。
Chen Yingzhen's literary creation is practical and pays attention to the important issues of contemporary Taiwanese society at any time. The idea of this class is to explore and re-understand the history and social thoughts of the and regional areas of Taiwan in the war by reading Chen Yingzhen's novels and perspectives.
