Settlement, Tectonics and Construction

教育目標 Course Target

How to understand contemporary architecture? Architecture is long history development in human civilisation, under different context, the FORM and TECTONICS will be varied according to human behaviours. Due to limited transportation in the past, when people build their own settlements, they may only use the materials easily available and with simple construction methods. People invented how to build the own houses, like the birds making the bird nets. In this course, students are required to research the traditional settlement and their tectonics, through the findings, students are invited to reinvent the technology to build the primitive hut project.
The courses will be organised in four stages with R:
Research: Research on ONE/TWO material(s) and its tectonics from certain area or villages, to investigate the history and application of the material(s)
Reconstruction : To reconstruct the material in traditional method and study its thermal/shading/structural stability.
Reinvention: Based on reconstruction, students shall design the new aesthetics by using the material and technology.
Redesign: Based on the new module design, students shall design the primitive hut as final project. The hut shall provides shelter for one single person to read, relax and sleep.
