陳其寬建築師是東海大學創校初期校園規劃的重要擘畫者之一，也是東海大學建築系創系的系主任。2021年適逢陳先生百歲冥誕，又遇到東海校園早期建築物邁入新階段的契機（包括：1. 重要建築已指定登錄為古蹟、歷史建築，早期校園範圍將納入文化景觀；2. 郵局剛遷出校園，亟需研擬活化再利用郵局舊址及周邊環境的空間對策），為建築研究所的同學們提供了一個實習與實踐的真實場域。
延續同學們上個學期在東海校園文資耕耘、思考保存管理維護計畫所奠定的基礎，本學期設計課將從不同的視角切入東海校園文資保存與再利用的議題。預期成果包括：
1. 建立一部屬於東海大學校園的《模式語言》（詳細條目待課程上公佈、討論）
2. 結合繪畫與建築共同探索陳其寬建築師的設計思維
3. 提出對舊郵局、信箱間、銘賢堂廣場一帶未來活化利用的空間策略Architect Chen Qikuan was one of the important architects of the campus planning in the early days of Tunghai University, and was also the founding director of the Department of Architecture of Tunghai University. 2021 coincides with Mr. Chen’s 100th birthday, and there is an opportunity for the early buildings of Donghai Campus to enter a new stage (including: 1. Important buildings have been designated as monuments and historical buildings, and the early campus will be included in the cultural landscape; 2 . The post office has just moved out of the campus, and there is an urgent need to develop spatial strategies for revitalizing and reusing the old post office site and its surrounding environment), which provides a real field for internship and practice for the students of the Institute of Architecture.
Continuing the foundation laid by the students in cultivating cultural resources on Donghai Campus and thinking about preservation, management and maintenance plans last semester, this semester’s design class will approach the issue of preservation and reuse of cultural resources on Donghai Campus from different perspectives. Expected results include:
1. Establish a "Pattern Language" belonging to the Tunghai University campus (detailed items will be announced and discussed in the course)
2. Combine painting and architecture to explore the design thinking of architect Chen Qikuan
3. Propose a spatial strategy for the future revitalization and utilization of the old post office, mailbox room, and Mingxiantang Square area
